Established in 1960 as a section within the Reference Department at "Ivan Vazov" National Library. It became a separate department in 1970. The department's priority is the search for, processing and provision of accurate and thorough information on the social, political and economic life, science, culture, education and arts in the Plovdiv region since antiquity through the use of traditional forms of library and information services and the automated databases.
By means of its reference collection, which includes annotated bibliographic information about events, facts and public figures since 1944, the Regional Studies Department serves as an information mediator between library users and the library collections.
The department publishes retrospective regional studies bibliographic guides, containing analytically described materials received through legal deposit in IVNL. From 1965 up to 1990 a current bibliographic guide, "Plovdivski Kraj", was published , featuring the entire life of towns and villages in the region. An automated database of over
100 000 entries has been built and is being maintained in the department.
The following collections with the corresponding reference apparatuses to them are to be found in the Regional Studies Department:
- Autographed books
- Manuscripts
- Decorative monumental projects
- An audio visual collection
The department provides consultations and information searches, as well as printouts from the databases maintained.
Written thematic bibliographic references are also provided against payment.
