The department consists of two sections: Acquisitions and Periodicals. The main activities of the Acquisitions Section include acquiring, supplementing and expanding the library collections through purchase, donations and exchange in all formats - books, printed music, audio-visual materials (multimedia), reproductions, albums, etc.). Acquisitions amount to an average of 13 000 items per year.
Purchasing is effected mainly through some of the bigger book markets in the town, such as "Letera-N", "Zhanet", "Pegas" and "Makros", and also through direct contacts with authors and publishers.
We have exchange programs with some major libraries in the following countries: Russia, the USA, Germany, Ukraine, Macedonia, the Slovak Republic. Both books and periodicals are being acquired along the lines of exchange.
Under the Legal Deposit Act, our library is entitled to a copy of each new publication on the Bulgarian book market. The legal deposit copies are available only in the library reading rooms.
The Periodicals Section provides users with information about newspapers and journals published in Bulgaria and abroad. Under the Legal Deposit Act, the library receives a free copy of all periodicals published in the country. The section is in charge of the subscriptions to the most sought after journals and newspapers. The other types of acquisitions are donations and exchange. Along the lines of exchange our collections are being supplemented with a number of foreign periodical titles, such as "Chinese Literature", "Slavonic Studies", "Chinese Medical Journal", "Reference Journal " Series 5,6 and 8, "AgExporter", "Resources of Education", "Library Science", "Science and Life", etc.
The section personnel maintain the periodicals catalogues in Bulgarian, Russian and Roman alphabets.
An electronic periodicals catalogue is being prepared - first of the Bulgarian periodicals and later of the those in other languages.
Current periodicals databases providing information about the issues available from each title are also being maintained.
All periodicals are to be used only in the reading rooms of the library.
