GERMAN READING ROOM
Welcome to the German Reading Room! Since 1998 it has been housed in a beautiful Revival house in the Old Town at the “House of Literature and Book”, later “Page” EOOD (SLLC). Since 2005 it has been part of the Plovdiv National Library. The Reading Room is the center of the German culture in Plovdiv. It is a favorite place for fans of German literature and culture. Among the permanent users are pupils, students, lecturers, as well as citizens from different professional spheres. In the pleasant atmosphere of German-language literature, everyone can find and read about the topics they are interested in. The reading room has over 5,000 library documents. Every year, thanks to the Goethe Institute, the fund is enriched with new titles: fiction, specialized and reference literature from all fields, teaching materials for German as a Foreign Language, various editions in the fields of art, architecture, design and photography, including the nominees for the Leipzig and Frankfurt fair titles; CDs with pop, rock and classical music, as well as literary works for listening; gaming and documentaries on DVD. This allows readers to quickly reach the latest titles on the German market. More than 25 titles of German-language specialized magazines and newspapers are regularly received in the reading room, which inform readers of all the world's news, such as Die Zeit, Spiegel, Focus, Art, Geo, Brigitte, Spektrum der Wissenschaft, Zuhause Wohnen, Psychology heute and others.
There are numerous projects to promote reading, interesting workshops that stand out with their innovativeness and encourage the exchange of experience among colleagues from across the country. The German reading room is also a preferred place for German language teachers from the city and the region. German language teachers are being consulted in the reading room, according to the teacher's department's program of the Goethe Institute in Sofia, where the consultant introduces the opportunities for online media lending as well as the latest German language learning materials. Co-operation with the Test Daf Center at the University of Plovdiv “P. Hilendarski” gives the most up-to-date training information about education in Germany and Austria, as well as about the exams needed for applying.
The German reading room occupies its special place in the cultural event program of the Ivan Vazov National Library. There are many interesting events such as exhibitions, literary readings, meetings with writers, competitions, workshops, which makes it a lively place for meetings of those interested in Germany and those studying German in Plovdiv. We are expecting you!
